European Union considers suspending plastic waste exports to Turkey
The European Commission has warned that it may suspend plastic waste exports to Turkey due to significant environmental management concerns. Despite reports indicating that only about 10 percent of imported plastic waste is recycled in Turkey, the EU has decided to continue shipments, citing Turkey's strengthened legal framework for waste management as a reason for compliance.
Last year, Turkey imported approximately 510,000 tons of plastic waste from the EU, representing 70 percent of all plastic waste exported to OECD countries. Concerns have been raised regarding the mismanagement of this waste, including improper disposal in landfills, open-air burning, and the discharge of microplastics into irrigation channels and Mediterranean coastlines, which threatens local tourism and ecosystems.
While the Commission noted these issues in a recent assessment, it concluded that current measures are generally aligned with international rules. The next formal review of the situation is scheduled for the end of 2028.
