European Union defense spending projected to reach 381 billion euros in 2025

European Union defense spending is projected to reach 381 billion euros in 2025, representing 2.1% of the region's GDP. This figure would exceed the NATO target by 0.1 percentage points, according to analysis by Banor.

This increase marks a shift in the European industrial model, moving away from reliance on United States protection toward a focus on industrial autonomy and operational readiness. In 2024, total defense spending grew by 19% year-on-year to 343 billion euros, or 1.9% of GDP. Within that spending, equipment purchases rose by 39% to 88 billion euros, indicating that states are attempting to rebuild critical technologies and industrial production rather than merely funding existing structures.

Analysts suggest that success for defense operators will depend on industrial capacity, including advanced technology, manufacturing facilities, and robust supply chains. However, the sector faces challenges such as fiscal constraints, slow procurement processes, and potential volatility caused by geopolitical de-escalation.
