European Union establishes security mission in Lebanon

The Council of the European Union has approved the creation of the EU Support Mission in Lebanon (EUSM Lebanon), a new civil and military operation designed to strengthen the country’s defense and security institutions. The mission has an initial mandate of three years and aims to promote long-term stability and state sovereignty in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

The mission will operate through two complementary pillars. The military component will provide advisory and training support to the Lebanese Armed Forces, focusing on border surveillance, maritime security, intelligence, and counter-smuggling operations. The civilian component will assist the Internal Security Forces with specialized training in areas such as cybercrime prevention, anti-smuggling, and port security governance, including at the Port of Beirut.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated that the mission is intended to help Lebanese authorities exercise better control over their territory and borders. The operation is expected to be ready for deployment within the next two months, following the completion of operational planning. The mission is not intended to replace the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
