European Union divided over potential sanctions on Israeli settlement goods

European Union foreign ministers remain divided following an informal meeting in Wicklow, Ireland, regarding potential trade sanctions against goods from illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Ireland and Spain, supported by Belgium and the Netherlands, are advocating for EU-wide restrictions. Irish Foreign Minister Helen McEntee emphasized the need for collective action, stating, “It is not credible for us to say we should uphold international law in one form and not do it in the other.” Ireland has already banned imports from settlements and is calling for a review of the EU-Israel Association Agreement.

Conversely, Germany, Austria, Czechia, and Hungary have expressed opposition to such sanctions, arguing that they would jeopardize diplomatic channels with Israel. The EU is Israel’s largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching nearly $50 billion last year.
