EU AI Act: New transparency and enforcement rules take effect
The European Union has begun enforcing new transparency and supervision obligations under the AI Act, effective August 2, 2026. These rules require companies to clearly identify AI-generated content, such as images, videos, and audio, to prevent consumer confusion and combat disinformation. Non-compliance may result in significant penalties, including fines of up to 15 million euros or 3% of a company's total global annual turnover.
In response, major AI developers are implementing technical solutions. Anthropic has announced it will add watermarks to text generated by its Claude models, while Google DeepMind utilizes SynthID-Text to identify AI-generated sequences. The European Commission has also exercised its new enforcement powers by requesting detailed information from leading developers regarding cybersecurity, safety protocols, and copyright compliance.
Globally, the impact of these regulations is being felt. In Spain, 98% of organizations have reportedly paused or canceled AI initiatives due to governance and compliance concerns. In Latin America, a report on 136 social impact organizations revealed that 72.8% lack formal AI governance mechanisms. Additionally, the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) has updated its disclosure framework to help advertisers navigate the complexities of AI-generated marketing content.
