European Union expresses concern over Tunisian court rulings

The European Union has expressed deep concern following the Tunisian Court of Cassation's decision on September 3, 2026, to uphold heavy prison sentences in the case known as the ‘conspiracy against state security’. The rulings affect dozens of public figures, including political opponents, activists, human rights defenders, and journalists, some of whom are European citizens.

In a statement released by the European External Action Service (EEAS), the EU raised serious questions regarding the guarantees of a fair trial and the respect for fundamental human rights, specifically freedom of expression. The EU also expressed regret over a judicial precedent where communications with accredited foreign diplomats, including Europeans, were used as grounds for indictment or as incriminating evidence.

While reaffirming its partnership with Tunisia and its support for the Tunisian people in strengthening democratic institutions, the EU has called on local authorities to restore the conditions necessary for political pluralism and independent voices to contribute to the country's development.
