European Union faces criticism over migration outsourcing and travel cost hikes

The European Union has shifted its migration strategy by outsourcing border protection to third‑country forces. Funds are paid to countries such as Libya to patrol coastal waters and return migrants, a practice criticised by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch for alleged breaches of the Geneva Convention, including reports of torture and forced labour in camps. The new EU Migration and Asylum Pact, effective 12 June, introduces biometric registration, border detentions and accelerated deportations, supported by 3,800 Frontex staff.

Separately, the EU is preparing to raise the cost of air travel to destinations outside the bloc. The proposed price increase is expected to affect younger, liberal‑leaning travellers, a demographic that has historically been a strong supporter of the Union. Critics argue the measure could alienate this group while offering little environmental benefit.

Both policy moves have sparked debate over their social impact and the EU’s approach to governance.
