EU migration policy: security shifts and integration efforts

In late July 2026, the European Union introduced a new Migration and Asylum Pact, effective 12 June, which expands biometric registration, border detentions, and accelerated deportations. Supported by 3,800 Frontex staff, the policy includes outsourcing coastal patrols to third-country forces like Libya. Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have criticized these measures for potential breaches of the Geneva Convention, citing reports of torture and forced labour in camps.

Simultaneously, the EU has proposed raising air-travel fees to non-EU destinations. Critics suggest this could alienate younger, liberal-leaning voters while offering minimal environmental benefits.

By mid-August, the policy landscape has shifted toward an increased focus on security and external controls. Recent migrant influxes in Ceuta have intensified debates regarding the tension between strict border enforcement and humanitarian principles. Proposed strategies include reinforcing Schengen coordination, establishing return centers, and processing asylum requests in third countries outside European territory. Observers have noted a fundamental contradiction where the free movement of goods and capital persists while human mobility faces increasingly rigid regulation, raising concerns that the pursuit of border security may undermine the rule of law and human dignity.

Parallel to these security shifts, the EU continues to address the economic dimensions of migration. The Action Plan on Integration and Inclusion 2021–2027 remains a key mechanism to support migrant entrepreneurs, particularly women, by providing financing and training to mitigate barriers such as the non-recognition of qualifications and limited access to credit.
