European Union implements new packaging and waste regulation
The European Union's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (EU) 2025/40 has entered general application, replacing Directive 94/62/EC. This regulation establishes a common framework for all 27 EU member states, placing increased importance on design, material selection, recyclability, and reuse.
During a recent meeting in Madrid organized by the Club de Excelencia en Sostenibilidad and Scrap Cartón Circular, industry representatives and experts discussed the implications for businesses. Key topics included the evolution of extended producer responsibility and the need for simplified reporting to avoid unnecessary administrative burdens.
Discussions also highlighted the importance of traceability in packaging and waste. Improving knowledge of waste lifecycles is seen as a way for companies to ensure regulatory compliance, identify process improvements, and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills.
