European Union implements strict new anti-greenwashing regulations

The European Union has implemented stricter regulations to combat greenwashing through Directive 2024/825, aimed at empowering consumers for the green transition. These rules, which took effect in late September 2026, prohibit companies from using vague or unverified environmental claims such as 'eco-friendly,' 'sustainable,' or 'carbon neutral' without robust evidence.

Beyond marketing terminology, the new legal framework addresses planned obsolescence. It targets practices like software updates that intentionally degrade device performance and misleading claims regarding product repairability or the use of non-original spare parts. Furthermore, companies can no longer claim carbon neutrality based solely on external carbon offsetting, such as tree-planting schemes, if those actions occur outside their primary value chain.

To ensure transparency, the regulations mandate that sustainability labels must be based on independent, verifiable certification systems or official state-issued marks, such as the EU Ecolabel. These measures are expected to impact various sectors, including packaging, jewelry, and beauty, and require businesses—including international exporters to the EU—to standardize their environmental evidence to remain compliant.
