European Union officials address escalating housing crisis
The housing crisis has emerged as a critical social and economic challenge across Europe, according to Irish Minister Thomas Byrne during a session at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Byrne, representing the presidency of the Council, noted that the issue is no longer confined to individual nations but has become a common interest for the entire European Union.
Spain has become a focal point of this crisis, particularly in cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and Malaga. The proliferation of short-term vacation rentals has removed thousands of apartments from the traditional residential market, driving rents to levels inaccessible to residents and young people. This trend has triggered increased evictions and uncontrolled rent hikes.
Minister Byrne announced an upcoming informal summit among European housing ministers to address these issues. He emphasized that access to affordable, dignified housing is essential for social participation, economic stability, and the ability of citizens to maintain their communities, pursue education, and start families.
