European Union plans Euro redesign and closer ties with Canada

The European Central Bank (ECB) is planning to redesign Euro banknotes to improve security against counterfeiting and increase sustainability. The new series will include denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 euros. To maintain cost efficiency, the physical sizes of the notes will remain unchanged to avoid the need for upgrading automated teller machines. Moving away from previous designs featuring bridges and windows, the new notes will utilize an abstract architectural style to ensure no single country is favored. The ECB is involving the approximately 360 million citizens of the Eurozone in the decision-making process; current options for the design themes include ‘European Culture’ or ‘Rivers and Birds’.

In a separate diplomatic development, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed interest in strengthening ties with Canada, suggesting the possibility of Canada becoming the first ‘associated member’ of the EU. While such a status does not currently exist in formal EU structures, it could imply deeper cooperation in research, defense, and the internal market without full voting rights. This move comes amid discussions regarding the ratification of the CETA trade agreement, which several EU member states have yet to finalize.
