European Union pledges €200 million aid package to Greenland

The European Union has committed a €200 million investment package for Greenland to be distributed over 2026 and 2027. The funds aim to support various sectors, including clean energy, digital connectivity, sustainable raw materials, fisheries, and climate change mitigation.

In Nuuk, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen signed a joint declaration alongside Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. The agreement includes initiatives such as enhancing satellite connectivity through the telecoms operator Tusass and supporting the modernization of energy supplies in remote settlements via hybrid renewable systems.

The EU is also proposing to increase direct aid to Greenland to €530 million within the 2028–2034 EU budget. This increased engagement comes amid heightened geopolitical interest in the Arctic due to Greenland’s strategic location and mineral resources. The signing of the declaration coincided with the NATO Arctic Shield exercises, which involve approximately 400 servicemen from 11 allied countries.
