European Union readies aid package for Armenia after Russian trade bans

The European Union is preparing a major economic support package for Armenia to mitigate the impact of trade restrictions imposed by Russia. The restrictions, which target roughly 20 product categories such as flowers, mineral water, wine, fruit, vegetables and fish, are estimated to affect about €420 million in annual imports.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced the initiative at a press conference in Luxembourg following talks with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and a meeting of EU foreign ministers. She said, "The Armenian people voted for peace, sovereignty and closer ties with Europe. Heavy pressure and economic coercion from Russia failed to influence the vote." The European Commission will propose autonomous trade measures that reduce tariffs for the affected Armenian exports, aiming to give Armenian companies greater access to the EU market. A new EU Partnership Mission in Armenia will also be launched to address cyber‑attacks, illicit financial flows and other security challenges.

The aid package reflects the EU’s effort to support Armenia’s economic resilience and diversification amid growing Russian pressure.
