European Union seeks new trade partners in Asia

The European Union is working to strengthen commercial ties with Southeast Asian nations and members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) to counter increasing global trade restrictions.

Speaking in Singapore, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the EU, representing a market of approximately 450 million consumers, is actively diversifying its economic partnerships. Merz emphasized that this strategy is a “deliberate alternative” to current global trends, aiming to demonstrate a different approach to international commerce.

The EU seeks to deepen cooperation with the 12 CPTPP member nations, including Japan, Canada, Australia, and Malaysia. Merz also called for better coordination of existing trade agreements with partners such as Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and India to facilitate market access for European companies.

In response, Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced intentions to accelerate negotiations for a free trade agreement between the EU and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Wong noted that securing such an agreement will be a priority during Singapore’s upcoming presidency of the regional organization in 2027.
