Global efforts to maintain trade openness

Overview

Regional leaders and international bodies are advocating for economic openness and the strengthening of existing trade frameworks to counter rising global trade restrictions and strategic competition.

At an APEC finance ministers’ meeting in Hong Kong, Singapore’s Second Minister for Finance Jeffrey Siow suggested that while new free trade agreements may not be trending, nations should utilize established platforms like the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) to maintain openness.

In a subsequent development in Singapore, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the European Union is actively diversifying its economic partnerships as a ‘deliberate alternative’ to current global trends. The EU is seeking to deepen cooperation with the 12 CPTPP member nations and coordinate existing agreements with partners such as Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and India. In response, Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced plans to accelerate negotiations for a free trade agreement between the EU and ASEAN, noting this will be a priority during Singapore’s 2027 ASEAN presidency.
