Nepal floods trigger UN emergency appeal and EU humanitarian aid
Devastating flash floods and glacier collapses in the Nepal-Tibet border region have caused massive casualties and destruction. Official reports indicate at least 1,295 deaths and nearly 5,000 missing persons on the Nepalese side, while Chinese authorities have reported 31 deaths and 531 missing persons in the Xizang region.
In response, the United Nations and its partners have launched a $49.6 million emergency appeal to provide vital aid to over 84,000 affected individuals. The four-month plan focuses on preventing disease outbreaks in high-altitude Himalayan communities by providing cash transfers, winterized shelter, and portable solar power.
The European Union has mobilized significant humanitarian assistance, including an 82-ton air bridge of essential supplies organized with UNICEF. The European Commission has also allocated an additional 500,000 euros through the Red Cross Red Crescent Disaster Relief Emergency Fund. Furthermore, countries including Luxembourg, Germany, Latvia, and Norway are contributing equipment such as medical supplies and emergency energy kits via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. The EU has also activated the Copernicus emergency satellite mapping service to support ground operations.
Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah is scheduled to address the 81st UN General Assembly on September 24. He is expected to advocate for climate justice and international compensation, highlighting the country's inability to manage such large-scale climate-driven disasters alone.
