European Union to ban single-use plastic luggage wrapping
The European Union is introducing strict regulations to ban the use of single-use plastic packaging at airports, a move aimed at drastically reducing plastic waste. This includes the common practice of wrapping suitcases in transparent shrink wrap, which travelers have long used to protect luggage from scratches, theft, and zipper damage.
Under the revised EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, the implementation will occur in stages. New rules will be phased in through December 31, 2027, with a total, exception-free ban set to take effect on January 1, 2030. Some airports, such as Hannover, have already independently banned luggage wrapping due to environmental concerns and technical issues, noting that films can jam automated sorting systems and complicate aircraft loading.
To replace plastic wrap, travelers are encouraged to use sustainable alternatives such as reusable fabric covers, heavy-duty luggage straps, and TSA-approved combination locks.
