European Union to ban misleading greenwashing claims by 2026

The European Union is implementing stricter regulations to combat greenwashing through the Directive on Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition (EmpCo), also known as Directive (EU) 2024/825. These rules are set to take effect on September 27, 2026, after member states complete their national legal integrations.

Under the new directive, companies will be prohibited from making vague or unsubstantiated environmental claims such as ‘eco-friendly’, ‘green’, or ‘sustainable’ without verifiable proof or recognized certification. A significant change involves the use of carbon-offsetting claims; businesses will no longer be able to describe products or services as ‘carbon neutral’, ‘climate neutral’, or ‘carbon positive’ if those claims rely on offsetting emissions outside the product’s own value chain.

These measures aim to protect consumers from misleading marketing and ensure that sustainability labels are based on independent certification systems or state-run bodies. Businesses operating within the EU are advised to review their packaging, advertising, and digital communications to ensure compliance with these upcoming transparency requirements.
