European Union to implement new aviation passenger rights in 2027

New European Union aviation regulations, set to take effect on October 23, 2027, will introduce significant changes to passenger rights and airline operational requirements.

Under the new rules, passengers will be entitled to carry one small personal item—such as a handbag, laptop bag, or small backpack—free of charge, provided it fits under the seat in front of them. Dimensions for these free items are specified at approximately 40 x 30 x 15 centimeters. While larger cabin trolley bags may still incur fees, airlines will be required to display the total price, including hand luggage, from the start of the booking process to ensure transparency.

Additional protections include:

• Family Seating: Children under 14 will be seated next to their parents free of charge. • Refunds and Compensation: Refund requests for delayed or canceled flights must be processed within seven calendar days. Compensation for denied boarding could reach up to four times the original ticket value. • Digital Accessibility: Airlines can no longer mandate the use of specific apps to access boarding passes; passengers must be able to access them freely or use printed copies without extra fees.

These directives aim to prevent unexpected costs and streamline the travel experience across the EU.
