European Union to implement new air passenger rights in 2027

The European Union has adopted Regulation 2026/2202, which introduces significant updates to air passenger rights. While the regulation enters into force in late 2026, the new rules will become applicable starting October 23, 2027.

Key changes regarding luggage include a guaranteed right to carry one small personal item (up to 40x30x15 cm) for free, provided it fits under the seat. While airlines can still charge for larger overhead cabin suitcases, they must now provide full price transparency, displaying all baggage costs before the booking process is completed.

Regarding flight disruptions, passengers are entitled to increased compensation for delays. For delays exceeding three hours, compensation may range from 250 to 600 euros depending on the flight distance. If a delay exceeds five hours, passengers may opt for a full refund. Additionally, airlines must provide enhanced assistance during prolonged delays, including meals, refreshments, internet access, and hotel accommodations if an overnight stay is required.
