European Union to introduce digital identity wallets

The European Union is introducing a digital wallet system to allow citizens to store and use digital versions of personal documents and certificates on their mobile devices. By December 24, 2026, every EU member state is expected to offer at least one certified digital wallet as part of the broader European digital identity system.

Key features of the system include enhanced privacy controls, allowing users to share only necessary data. For example, a user could prove they are of legal age without revealing their full date of birth. The use of the digital wallet will not be mandatory, as physical documents like ID cards and driver's licenses will remain valid.

Implementation speeds vary across the bloc. Italy is currently among the leaders in digital identity adoption, while Germany has announced plans to begin its system's operation in early 2027. Other nations, such as the Netherlands and Bulgaria, are still in the preparatory or legislative phases.
