European Union to launch new support mission for Lebanese security forces

The European Union is preparing to launch a new mission, the European Union Support Mission in Lebanon, to provide training and advisory services to the Lebanese Armed Forces and internal security agencies. EU High Representative Kaja Kallas announced that planning for the mission is complete and expects EU foreign ministers to formally establish it this coming Monday.

This new initiative is intended to support Lebanese state sovereignty and security but is not a replacement for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). While UNIFIL is set to cease operations on December 31 following UN Security Council Resolution 2790, the EU mission will focus on logistical, advisory, and training roles rather than direct military combat operations. Unlike UNIFIL, the EU mission's mandate is not restricted to southern Lebanon.

Efforts by countries like Italy and France aim to maintain an international presence in the country to prevent a security vacuum. While discussions continue regarding the transition, recruitment for the EU mission has already commenced. Meanwhile, Lebanese officials have expressed a desire for any successor force to remain under a United Nations umbrella to ensure stability.
