European Union to phase out plastic luggage wrapping

The European Union is introducing new regulations to phase out certain types of single-use plastic packaging, a move that will eventually ban the common practice of wrapping luggage in protective plastic film at airports.

The implementation of these rules will be gradual, with restrictions beginning by the end of 2027 and a total ban on specific single-use plastics, including luggage film, aimed for January 1, 2030. The primary goal is to significantly reduce plastic waste.

Beyond environmental concerns, airports have noted technical issues caused by plastic film, such as it getting caught in automated baggage sorting systems and complicating the loading of luggage onto aircraft. Some locations, such as Hannover Airport, have already implemented bans on plastic luggage wrapping.

To replace the film, experts suggest several alternatives for protecting luggage from scratches, dirt, or theft, including reusable fabric covers, security straps, and TSA-approved combination locks.
