European Union unfreezes Peace Facility for Ukraine military aid

The European Union has lifted the freeze on the European Peace Facility to bolster military aid for Ukraine. This move allows member states to be reimbursed for the costs of weapons and military equipment they have transferred to Ukraine from their own national stockpiles.

According to Kaia Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, the release of the funds includes 1 billion euros specifically allocated for purchasing weapons for Ukraine. The broader package includes 4.7 billion euros to compensate member states for past transfers, 900 million euros to fund the EU Military Assistance Mission to Ukraine, and 1 billion euros dedicated to the joint procurement of new defense equipment.

Several EU nations have pledged to redirect their reimbursements back into further support for Ukraine. Germany and Sweden have specifically affirmed that the funds they receive through this mechanism will be immediately redirected to continue assisting Ukraine.
