The European Union has called on the Israeli government to withdraw a tender for the construction of more than 1,200 housing units in the E1 zone of the occupied West Bank. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas stated that the project would undermine the prospects for a two-state solution by dividing the West Bank and isolating East Jerusalem.

Kallas emphasized that Israeli settlements in the West Bank, including the E1 area, are illegal under international law. The EU also expressed concern regarding record levels of violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinian residents, urging the Israeli government to ensure accountability for such actions.

The E1 project involves a 12-square-kilometer area northeast of East Jerusalem within the municipal boundaries of the Ma'ale Adumim settlement. The EU reaffirmed its commitment to a peace process based on UN Security Council resolutions, aiming for two democratic states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side within recognized borders.
