European universities face scrutiny over Israeli academic partnerships

Academic institutions in Denmark and Sweden are facing scrutiny regarding their partnerships with Israeli universities. In Denmark, the University of Copenhagen (KU) has established a new exchange agreement with Tel Aviv University (TAU). Critics, including students, argue that this partnership is ethically problematic because TAU maintains a ‘war room’ where students assist in developing technology used by the Israeli military in Gaza.

Similar concerns regarding academic autonomy and institutional complicity have been raised in Sweden. Activists and academic groups are calling for Swedish universities to end formal collaborations with Israeli institutions and instead prioritize support for Palestinian academics and students in exile. These groups advocate for following Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) guidelines to maintain academic independence and distance from military-linked research.
