European universities gain international students amid Anglosphere declines

European universities are seeing an increase in international student enrollments, gaining ground as traditional hubs like the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia face challenges. Data indicates that international arrivals to the U.S. fell by 12% in January 2026 compared to the previous year, with significant declines in bachelor and master's enrollments.

Several factors are driving this shift, including stricter migration policies, visa complications, and rising tuition and living costs in Anglosphere nations. A survey of 254 higher education institutions across 36 countries found that 67% of respondents cited government policy and visa issues as major negative impacts on enrollment.

In contrast, continental European institutions are benefiting from a perceived higher quality of life and more accessible costs. While the UK and Canada have seen double-digit percentage drops in various student categories, European institutions are reporting growth, creating a more competitive market for global higher education.
