Italy faces intense heatwaves and record regional inflation

Italy is experiencing a period of extreme weather and economic pressure. A series of intense heatwaves is affecting much of the country, with temperatures in southern regions like Calabria and Sicily expected to reach between 35°C and 40°C. While some areas may see temporary relief through thunderstorms and a slight drop in temperatures, a strong African anticyclone is forecast to bring a new wave of heat across the peninsula through the coming weekend.

In Calabria, the situation is compounded by economic challenges. Regional inflation has reached 3.5%, surpassing the national average of 2.9%. CNA Calabria has raised alarms regarding this record inflation, noting that rising costs for energy, fuel, and logistics are impacting both families and businesses. The organization warns that these economic pressures, combined with structural difficulties, contribute to the migration of young people from the region.
