ECB warns climate crisis threatens financial stability amid European wildfires

European Central Bank board member Frank Elderson said the climate emergency and the rapid loss of ecosystem services pose a growing risk to the eurozone’s financial stability. The ECB is stepping up monitoring of nature‑related risks, has launched a programme to assess how ecosystem degradation could translate into credit losses for banks, and plans to publish an analysis later this year. Record‑breaking temperatures have fueled massive wildfires in France and Spain, destroying land, businesses and homes and generating billions of euros in economic damage. After the United States left the Network for Greening the Financial System, the ECB now leads climate‑related financial supervision in Europe and has already fined a Spanish bank for failing to assess climate and environmental risks.
