Europeans express strong support for agriculture and the Common Agricultural Policy
A recent Eurobarometer survey reveals that 95% of Europeans consider agriculture and rural areas vital to the future of the European Union. Furthermore, 93% of respondents view securing a stable food supply for the EU as a crucial priority.
The survey indicates strong support for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), with 70% of citizens believing it benefits the general population. Key achievements noted by respondents include securing stable food supplies (93%), managing natural resources sustainably (92%), and strengthening the role of farmers (91%).
Regarding consumer habits, quality and origin are primary drivers. Nearly 80% of Europeans consider EU origin an important or very important factor when purchasing food. Additionally, approximately 90% of respondents prioritize short supply chains, high environmental and animal welfare standards, and quality labels in their purchasing decisions.
While most believe food security has remained stable or improved over the last decade, over 90% of those surveyed recognize the potential threat that extreme weather events pose to food supplies and security.
