Greece records lowest EU rate for online information verification

According to 2025 Eurostat data, only 29.2% of citizens aged 16–74 in the European Union reported actively verifying the reliability of online content by comparing it with other sources.

Greece recorded the lowest rate among the reported member states, with only 9.8% of citizens attempting to verify information encountered online. In contrast, higher rates of verification were observed in Ireland (63.6%), the Netherlands (53.1%), and Luxembourg (45.2%).

Experts highlight that this low level of active fact-checking is concerning, especially as Artificial Intelligence makes the creation of deceptive images, videos, and voices increasingly easy. While European regulations and initiatives like the European Shield of Democracy aim to protect societies from misinformation and foreign interference, there is a significant emphasis on the need for improved digital literacy and education to help citizens critically evaluate online sources.
