Romania records largest annual retail sales decline in EU
Romania has recorded the sharpest annual decline in retail sales within the European Union, according to Eurostat data for July 2026. The country saw a 5.7% drop in retail turnover compared to the same period in 2025, a figure significantly worse than the 1% growth reported for the EU as a whole and the 0.6% growth in the Eurozone.
Data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS) highlights a broad contraction in Romanian consumer spending. In July 2026, sales of food, beverages, and tobacco fell by 5.4%, non-food products dropped by 6.4%, and fuel sales decreased by 7% compared to the previous year. This trend follows a continuous 12-month period of declining consumption.
In response to the economic downturn, PSD President Sorin Grindeanu stated that the party is prepared to seek the necessary parliamentary majority to form a government, arguing that Romania urgently requires clear political direction to address the ongoing economic and social crisis.
