Romanian retail and e-commerce market trends

Overview

Romania’s retail sector shows divergent trends between traditional and digital markets. In July 2026, Eurostat data indicated that Romania experienced the sharpest annual retail sales decline in the European Union, with a 5.7% drop in turnover. This contraction included significant decreases in food, beverages, tobacco, non-food products, and fuel sales, prompting political calls for new government leadership to address the economic crisis.

Conversely, the country’s e-commerce sector has seen rapid expansion. By 2025, Romania’s online market value reached EUR 12.9 billion, making it the largest e-commerce market in Eastern Europe and accounting for over half of the region’s total e-commerce value. E-commerce now contributes 3.39% to Romania’s GDP, exceeding regional averages.
