Eurozone inflation data drives market moves as Greece rolls out price‑cut scheme
Inflation figures for Germany and France released in June confirmed a slowdown in consumer‑price growth, matching forecasts but offering no surprise boost for investors. European stock indexes opened with mixed signals: Germany's DAX slipped 0.16%, France's CAC 40 fell 0.08%, while the UK's FTSE 100 rose 0.05% and Italy's FTSE MIB gained 0.07%. The euro strengthened 0.11% against the dollar, trading around $1.144.
In Greece, the government and major supermarket chains announced a voluntary national initiative to cut prices on essential food and household products beginning 31 August. Discounts of at least 5%, lasting two to four months, will apply to fast‑moving items such as meat, dairy, bread, rice, oil, baby food and cleaning supplies. The move follows a drop in overall inflation to 4.4% in June, with food inflation at 2.7%, and aims to relieve household budgets.
