Euskadi makes official debut at Basque Pelota World Championship
The Euskal Selekzioa is making its official debut at the Basque Pelota World Championship in Buenos Aires and Colonia del Sacramento. This historic participation follows a statutory change approved by the International Federation of Basque Pelota (FIPV), which granted Euskadi full rights to compete as a recognized selection.
Vice-president of the Basque Government, Ibone Bengoetxea, attended the opening ceremony at the CeNARD sports complex, describing the event as a milestone that allows Basque athletes to compete on equal terms with other nations. The Basque delegation consists of 42 athletes competing across various modalities.
The championship features 15 competing selections, including France, Spain, the United States, Mexico, and the host nations, Argentina and Uruguay. While the tournament offers 22 medals, the Basque team is eligible for 15 due to the timing of their official admission. The competition includes disciplines such as cesta punta, trinkete, and frontball.
