Eutelsat and OroraTech partner for satellite-based wildfire detection
Eutelsat and OroraTech have entered a strategic partnership to enhance wildfire detection capabilities using space-based thermal intelligence. Under the agreement, OroraTech will host thermal infrared payloads aboard Eutelsat’s future OneWeb Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites.
The partnership includes a commitment for 48 thermal payloads, with an option for an additional 48. This expansion aims to significantly increase the frequency of monitoring and reduce detection times for wildfires, particularly in remote areas. Beyond wildfire management, the technology is intended to support maritime safety, environmental monitoring, and the protection of critical infrastructure.
Announced at the International Space Summit in Paris, the initiative is supported by the French and German governments as part of a broader Franco-German space cooperation program. For Eutelsat, the collaboration represents a diversification of its LEO satellite utility beyond standard connectivity services.
