Eutelsat OneWeb constellation service expansion

Overview

Eutelsat is expanding the utility and management of its OneWeb Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation through new technological partnerships and software tools.

Initially, Eutelsat partnered with OroraTech to integrate thermal infrared payloads onto future OneWeb satellites. This initiative, supported by French and German space cooperation programs, aims to enhance wildfire detection in remote areas and support maritime safety and environmental monitoring.

Following this, Eutelsat Network Solutions and G&S SatCom launched an upgraded Online Management Tool. This platform is designed for government users to automate provisioning and manage connectivity via the OneWeb constellation, shifting toward software-defined orchestration to reduce administrative overhead.

In September 2026, Eutelsat Group CEO Jean-François Fallacher announced a major expansion of the constellation, ordering 229 additional OneWeb satellites from Airbus Defence and Space. This brings the total number of new satellites ordered to 669, representing an investment of approximately 1 billion euro intended to replenish and expand the network through 2034.

Eutelsat aims to maintain a fleet of roughly 1,300 active OneWeb satellites by 2030. This fleet will include Gen 1.5 units with upgraded software-defined capabilities and dedicated defense payloads for the French Ministry of Armed Forces. The company’s long-term strategy serves as a technical bridge to the European Union’s IRIS² multi-orbit network, aligning its operational framework to facilitate a transition of commercial and government customers to the IRIS² system in the early 2030s.
