EV battery longevity and new silicon anode technologies
A global study by the Austrian company AVILOO, which analyzed 500,000 batteries between 2022 and 2026, suggests that electric vehicle (EV) batteries degrade much slower than commonly feared. Testing across 20 popular models, including the Tesla Model Y and Hyundai Ioniq 5, the data showed an average State of Health (SoH) of approximately 94-95% at 50,000 km and roughly 91% at 150,000 km. Even the lowest-performing models remained above the 80% threshold targeted by future Euro 7 standards.
In parallel, European researchers are seeking to revitalize the continent's battery industry through nanotechnology. Following the bankruptcy of companies like Northvolt and Morrow, the Dutch firm LeydenJar is developing a plasma deposition technique to create stable silicon anodes. This method aims to prevent the cracking typically caused by silicon expansion during charging, potentially increasing energy density by up to 50% and improving both charging speeds and battery lifespan.
