EV charging providers shift toward subscription-based pricing models

Electric vehicle charging providers and utilities are shifting toward subscription-based and allowance-based pricing models to provide more predictable costs for drivers and commercial operators.

In the UK, Be. EV has launched two new charging passes: the Go Pass at £49 per month for a 120kWh allowance, and the Go Further Pass at £89 per month for 250kWh. Once allowances are exhausted, users transition to an off-peak rate of 49p/kWh. The company stated that these models aim to mirror the simplicity of mobile phone contracts as the UK market matures.

In California, the three largest utilities are restructuring commercial EV charging rates to address demand charges. PG&E has introduced a subscription-based kilowatt allocation to replace traditional demand charges. SDG&E has implemented a similar model where customers select a maximum capacity in specific increments. Conversely, Southern California Edison will maintain energy-only rates with no demand charges for commercial EV users until the end of 2029.
