Eva Umlauf urges Hendrik Wüst to pursue AfD ban
Eva Umlauf, President of the International Auschwitz Committee and a Holocaust survivor, is increasing pressure on North Rhine-Westphalia Minister President Hendrik Wüst to pursue legal proceedings to ban the AfD party.
Wüst met with Umlauf at the state chancery following an open letter she sent him. During the meeting, Wüst stated that antisemitism must not be allowed to gain ground. He has previously advocated for the creation of a federal-state working group to examine the constitutional implications and potential legal consequences regarding the AfD, particularly following the party's success in the Saxony-Anhalt state elections.
Wüst has cautioned against hasty decisions, noting that any investigation must be open-ended and not automatically result in a ban. Meanwhile, CDU leader Friedrich Merz has expressed skepticism regarding the likelihood of a successful ban of the party.
