Evergrande founder Hui Ka Yan sentenced to life in prison
Hui Ka Yan, the founder of China Evergrande Group, has been sentenced to life in prison by the Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court. The ruling, issued on August 20, 2026, follows charges including bribery, embezzlement, and fraud related to capital raising and the fraudulent issuance of securities.
The court also ordered the confiscation of all of Hui’s personal assets and stripped him of his political rights for life. Between 2016 and 2021, Hui and his companies were found to have systematically falsified financial data to inflate assets and conceal liabilities. Additionally, the court imposed significant fines on the conglomerate: 8.82 billion yuan (approximately 1.1 billion euros) on the Evergrande Group and 7 billion yuan (approximately 900 million euros) on Evergrande Real Estate.
The collapse of the property giant has significantly impacted China’s housing market and broader economy. The legal proceedings have also implicated other individuals, with 56 associates receiving prison sentences. Furthermore, reports suggest that former Politburo member Ma Xingrui may soon face trial due to connections to the case.
