Evergrande Group bankruptcy and founder sentencing

Overview

The China Evergrande Group has collapsed following a massive debt crisis totaling approximately $300 billion. A Chinese court has officially declared the real estate giant bankrupt, a move that follows the implementation of the ‘three red lines’ policy designed to restrict developer borrowing.

The company’s downfall is closely linked to the legal proceedings against its founder, Xu Jiayin (also referred to as Hui Ka Yan). On August 20, 2026, the Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court sentenced Xu to life imprisonment after he was convicted of eight economic crimes, including fraud in capital raising, embezzlement, and bribery. The court found that between 2016 and 2021, Xu and Evergrande entities systematically falsified financial data by inflating assets and concealing liabilities.

In addition to Xu’s life sentence and the confiscation of all his personal assets, the court stripped him of his political rights for life. Evergrande Group was fined 8.82 billion yuan, while Evergrande Real Estate received a fine of 7 billion yuan. The legal proceedings have also implicated 56 associates who received prison sentences. Furthermore, reports suggest that former Politburo member Ma Xingrui may soon face trial due to connections to the case.

The crisis has resulted in over 1,300 unfinished projects across roughly 280 cities, creating significant uncertainty for investors, homebuyers, and the broader Chinese economy.
