Eva Perón’s anniversary sparks split Peronist ceremonies in La Plata

On July 26, the 74th anniversary of Eva Perón’s death was marked by two separate ceremonies at Plaza Moreno in La Plata. The night‑time vigil, organized by the La Cámpora youth movement, highlighted support for former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and condemned her legal situation. Less than twelve hours later, a second event led by Buenos Aires Province governor Axel Kicillof and La Plata mayor Julio Alak featured provincial Peronist leaders and criticized the national libertarian government of Javier Milei.

Parallel tributes took place across Argentina: Cristina Fernández de Kirchner sang “Razón de vivir” with militants in Buenos Aires; a commemorative mass was held in Santiago del Estero attended by senior Justicialist Party officials; and Kicillof’s speech reiterated Evita’s motto “behind every need there is a right” while urging organization against foreign influence. Historical pieces also recalled Evita’s role in women’s suffrage, the foundation of the Peronist Women’s Party, and her lasting symbolic status as champion of the humble.
