Eva Perón anniversary highlights Peronist split

Argentina marked the 74th anniversary of Eva Perón’s death on July 26 2026 with a series of tributes that underscored her continuing symbolic power and the internal divisions within the Peronist movement. In La Plata, the commemorations split into two separate ceremonies at Plaza Moreno. A night‑time vigil organized by the La Cámpora youth movement honoured Perón while expressing support for former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and condemning the legal actions against her. Less than twelve hours later, a provincial ceremony led by Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof and La Plata Mayor Julio Alak brought together senior Peronist officials, criticized the libertarian policies of President Javier Milei, and reiterated Evita’s motto that “behind every need there is a right.”

Parallel tributes occurred nationwide: Fernández de Kirchner sang “Razón de vivir” with militants in Buenos Aires; a commemorative mass was held in Santiago del Estero attended by Justicialist Party leaders; and Kicillof’s speech called for organization against foreign influence. The anniversary thus served both to reaffirm Perón’s historic role in labor rights, women’s suffrage and social welfare, and to illustrate the factional split within contemporary Peronism.
