Ex Ilva lawyers argue human health outweighs plant loss
Lawyers representing 11 citizens from Taranto, including members of the Genitori Tarantini association, have filed a legal brief with the Milan Court of Appeal regarding the shutdown of the ex Ilva plant. The brief argues that the potential loss of industrial facilities cannot be compared to the risk of human lives, which they claim have long been sacrificed for production needs.
The legal action follows a July decree by Milanese judges mandating the shutdown of the plant's hot area by the end of October. The ex Ilva legal team has requested a suspension of this order, asking the court to wait for a decision from the Supreme Court.
In response, the lawyers for the Taranto families contend that there is no proven irreparable prejudice to the company, attributing any potential loss of plant functionality to the company's own “omissive, short-sighted, and dilatory” business policies. An upcoming hearing is scheduled for September 30 to discuss the request for suspension, with further discussions regarding the appeal set for October 20.
