Taranto Ilva steel plant industrial crisis

The future of the Ilva steel plant in Taranto is facing significant uncertainty following a Court of Appeal ruling that led to the closure of the facility’s ‘hot area’. Italian Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, has called for an extraordinary plan to address the resulting social, productive, and employment crises. Urso indicated that an Italian consortium may present a proposal in the ongoing bidding process, which includes competitors Jindal and Flacks, and emphasized that the government intends to increase investments in Southern Italy.

Stakeholders are currently debating whether to maintain primary steel production via blast furnaces or transition the site into a tertiary center for steel rolling. Industry representatives, including Claudio Cioetto of Confimi Apindustria Verona, have argued that maintaining primary production is essential for Italy’s industrial sovereignty to avoid reliance on imports from China or India. Cioetto warned that addressing only the ‘cold area’ of the plant without the ‘hot area’ would effectively halve the facility, resulting in a loss of domestic expertise and competitiveness.
