Ex Ilva supply chain: 2,500 workers face dismissal in Taranto

The industrial crisis at the former Ilva steel plant in Taranto has escalated into a significant social emergency. The Aigi association, representing supply chain and contracting companies, has formally initiated collective dismissal procedures affecting more than 2,500 workers. These layoffs are being carried out by approximately 28 companies associated with Aigi.

The decision is a direct consequence of a ruling by the Milan Court of Appeal, which mandated the closure of the plant’s hot area by the end of October due to environmental and health concerns regarding asbestos and emissions. Aigi president Nicola Convertino described the move as an “extreme and painful act” that was nonetheless “inevitable” due to the lack of industrial programming and the failure to activate new decarbonization plants to ensure production continuity.

Labor unions, including Fim, Fiom, Uilm, and Usb, have reacted strongly, calling the situation a “social emergency” and criticizing the Meloni government for failing to provide adequate resources or a clear industrial strategy. Unions are demanding an urgent meeting with the government to prevent further job losses, noting that the crisis could eventually impact up to 18,000 workers across the plant and its entire industrial ecosystem.
