Acciaierie d’Italia faces major shutdowns across Taranto and northern Italy

The Italian steel industry is facing a severe crisis as Acciaierie d’Italia (formerly Ilva) prepares for significant production shutdowns. Following a ruling by the Milan Court of Appeal that prioritized public health over industrial activity, production at the hot end of the Taranto steelworks was suspended on October 9. The facilities are currently in a heated standby mode, but the company warned that without a favorable decision from the Court of Cassation on October 20, a definitive shutdown could occur by October 25.

The crisis is expanding to northern Italy, with Acciaierie d’Italia announcing a temporary general shutdown of its plants in Genoa, Novi Ligure, and Racconigi by November 15. This move threatens the stability of the entire national steel supply chain.

In response, metalworkers' unions Fim, Fiom, and Uilm have called for a 24-hour national strike across all sites on October 12. The unions are protesting the lack of a clear industrial plan and are demanding protections for the more than 2,000 workers at risk of job losses. Meanwhile, the Italian government is considering a 125 million euro fund to provide social safety net measures and redundancy payments (Cassa Integrazione) to mitigate the impact on employees.
