Exeter Study Finds Puzzles and Arts Slow Brain Aging
Research by the University of Exeter involving more than 19,000 adults over age 50 shows that regular puzzle‑solving, such as Sudoku or crosswords, keeps cognitive performance at levels comparable to people up to eight years younger. Study "Protect" found that even two minutes of daily puzzle activity can build a protective “cognitive reserve.” Matthew Kiernan, executive director of Neuroscience Research Australia, explained, “Cells that fire together wire together,” highlighting how sustained mental stimulation strengthens neuronal connections.
A separate analysis of nearly 1,900 English adults linked frequent attendance at museums, theatres, cinemas and concerts to a modestly slower physiological ageing, with each point on a cultural‑participation scale reducing estimated biological age by about one month. Both findings suggest that mental and cultural engagement may help preserve brain health in later life, though further experimental work is needed to confirm causality.
